Overview
Global Water Frequency Product

The extent of inland water bodies can have a high dynamic due to seasonality and extreme weather events, such as flooding, drought, and late-season snow and ice cover. The inland water frequency dataset delineates water dynamic at both spatial and temporal dimensions by measuring the occurrence of water through a year. It provides a more comprehensive estimation of global water area and changes in compare to static inland water maps.

The Water Frequency (WF) layers contain estimates of the percentage of water occurrence among all valid Landsat observation through the target year. The confidences of the estimates were provided in the error layer. The inland water mapping Algorithm (Feng, et al.2015) was applied for Landsat water mapping. Cloud contaminated observations were identified using FMask (https://github.com/USGS-EROS/espa-cloud-masking) and excluded.
